The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) has inaugurated the second phase of its animal-assisted therapy programme under the slogan "Family: The Foundation of Our Nation," in alignment with Dubai Social Agenda 33.
This initiative aims to foster happier, closer, and more tolerant families, emphasizing the family's role as the cornerstone of societal growth.
The programme, launched with a workshop led by Zahra Poonawala, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Equine and Animal Assisted Therapist, targeted 30 service providers in social home care for women and children, as well as police sector workers specializing in protection.
Sheikha Saeed Al Mansouri, Acting Director General of DFWAC, highlighted the success of the first phase, which significantly enhanced participants' mental and physical well-being through interaction with animals. The second phase aims to broaden the scope, including professionals working with abuse victims, to expand the programme's reach.
Al Mansouri noted that this innovative therapy aligns with Dubai's social strategy to build a cohesive, sustainable society. The workshop provided comprehensive training on animal-assisted psychotherapy, covering its origins, scientific basis, and ethical standards, concluding with practical sessions involving trained animals.
Since its inception in 2022, the programme has benefited 255 children and women through 202 sessions, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing stress and improving emotional health. By integrating trained animals into therapy, DFWAC continues to develop new methods to support victims of violence and enhance their adaptive capabilities, contributing to a healthier and more supportive community.
The initiative reflects DFWAC's commitment to enhancing life quality and social cohesion, supporting Dubai's vision for a prosperous future grounded in strong family values.
