Dubai Future Foundation has unveiled a new report positioning space-based solar power as a transformative clean energy solution that could help meet soaring global electricity demand expected to triple by 2050.

The findings were released during the fourth Dubai Future Forum, the world’s largest gathering of futurists.

The report outlines how space-based solar power collects energy in space and transmits it wirelessly to Earth, providing a continuous source of clean power unaffected by weather or geography. With the global market projected to reach US$2 trillion, the technology is seen as a catalyst for major economic and developmental opportunities.

According to the report, sectors such as aviation, energy, finance, infrastructure, automotive, and public utilities stand to benefit from advances in this field. Abdulaziz AlJaziri, Deputy CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, said the technology presents a significant opportunity to reshape the global energy landscape, offering access to a sustainable and unlimited power source.

The study identifies five components needed for a functioning system, including launch platforms, in-orbit assembly stations, solar capture technology, wireless transmission systems, and ground receiving infrastructure that converts transmitted energy into usable electricity.

By 2050, renewable sources are expected to provide 90 percent of global electricity, yet current technologies may only meet two-thirds of demand. The report positions space-based solar power as a viable large-scale alternative to support decarbonisation efforts.

It also highlights rising global interest, with governments and private companies in Asia, Europe, and North America investing in pilot projects. The report outlines the path to commercialisation, noting the importance of regulatory frameworks, technological readiness, and international collaboration.

The full report is available on the Dubai Future Foundation website.
