The Dubai International Marine Club has announced the formation of a Supreme Organising Committee for the 35th edition of the Al Gaffal Race, one of the UAE’s most prominent heritage sporting events.

The race will be held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reaffirming strong leadership support for traditional marine sports.

The decision was made during the club’s second Board of Directors meeting for 2026. The committee will be chaired by Dr Ahmed Saeed bin Meshar, with Saif Juma Al Suwaidi as Vice-Chairman. Members include Khalid Khamis bin Dismal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib, CEO of the club, while Mohammed Fadhel Al Sadi will serve as Rapporteur.

Dr bin Meshar praised Sheikh Hamdan’s continued backing of marine sports, highlighting the race’s alignment with the vision of its founder, the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Since its launch in 1991, the Al Gaffal Race has grown into a flagship heritage event, reflecting the UAE’s deep-rooted maritime traditions.

Spanning more than 50 nautical miles, the race recreates the historic return journey from pearl diving expeditions and attracts over 3,000 participants annually. It remains a powerful symbol of the nation’s cultural identity and its longstanding relationship with the sea.

Organisers said the 2026 race is proposed to take place between 16 and 31 May, subject to ongoing safety assessments. The committee will oversee contingency planning, logistical readiness, and coordination with authorities to ensure the highest safety standards.

The 34th edition, held in May last year, saw more than 110 dhows compete, with Zilzal 25 securing its fourth title.
