Dubai Internet City Celebrates 25 Years as a Catalyst for Middle East’s Digital Economy
Dubai Internet City (DIC), established 25 years ago as a pioneering digital hub, continues to drive the Middle East’s digital economy, bringing together global technology leaders, start-ups, and top talent.
Launched on October 29, 1999, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, DIC was created to harness the power of emerging technologies and solidify the UAE’s knowledge-based economy.
Recently, the United Nations designated October 29 as “World Coding Day” in honor of Dubai Internet City’s anniversary, reflecting its role in shaping the region’s tech landscape. In 2024, DIC’s community has grown significantly, housing over 4,000 businesses—a 17.5% increase from last year—and more than 31,000 tech professionals.
Ammar Al Malik, Executive Vice President of Commercial at TECOM Group and Managing Director of Dubai Internet City, highlighted DIC’s vital role in fostering innovation:
“Driven by visionary leadership, DIC has enabled global technological advancement for 25 years, becoming a global destination for AI, fintech, and Web3 companies.”
Al Malik emphasized DIC’s commitment to sustaining Dubai’s status as a digital innovation hub, in alignment with strategic plans like the Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33.’
With AED1.9 billion in investments, DIC has expanded its infrastructure to meet the needs of tech giants, including developing the Innovation Hub, a dedicated R&D space. This expansion supports top firms such as Gartner and China Telecom, with Phase 2 set for completion in 2025.
As the digital economy grows, Dubai Internet City remains a vibrant nexus of knowledge-sharing and collaboration, ensuring Dubai’s ongoing leadership in the global technology sector.
