Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has issued the first two Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licences for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to Tesla and UAEV, marking a significant milestone in the emirate's green mobility journey.

This initiative falls under DEWA’s newly launched Regulatory and Licensing Framework aimed at enhancing the development and operation of EV charging infrastructure across Dubai.

Unveiled during GITEX Global 2024, the framework addresses current and future needs while supporting Dubai’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It ensures robust infrastructure development to meet the rising demand for EVs, guaranteeing a seamless and safe user experience.

At the event, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, emphasized the authority's commitment to fostering electric vehicle adoption, reflecting the UAE’s vision for sustainable mobility.

“In 2014, DEWA pioneered the region's first public EV charging infrastructure. This new framework furthers collaboration between public and private sectors, addressing the increasing demand for high-standard EV charging stations,”

Al Tayer stated.

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of UAEV, expressed enthusiasm for the growing EV market in the UAE. The aim is to ensure that electric and hybrid vehicles comprise 50% of all vehicles on UAE roads by 2050.

Mottie Benhamou, Market Leader – Tesla UAE, remarked,

“Tesla’s mission aligns with the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategy. By expanding access to innovative charging solutions, we support the country’s efforts to reduce fossil fuel reliance and promote electric vehicle adoption.”
