Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) announced today that Emirates Airline, Amazon, Careem, and GEMS Education have joined its Gig Economy Sandbox, an initiative under the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) aimed at developing regulatory frameworks to support the evolving gig economy.
The launch event, held at Emirates Towers, brought together government officials, regulatory bodies, and Sandbox Dubai partners to further efforts in creating a future-ready city.
The Gig Economy Sandbox, part of the broader Sandbox Dubai platform, focuses on fostering collaboration between government and private sectors to establish flexible regulations that benefit both workers and industries reliant on seasonal employment, such as tourism, retail, aviation, and logistics. This regulatory initiative seeks to enhance Dubai's labor market competitiveness and future-readiness, addressing the increasing demand for adaptable work models in the global economy.
Khalifa AlQama, Executive Director of Sandbox Dubai, underscored the importance of private sector contributions in shaping future-focused regulations.
“Our team will work closely with public and private partners to pilot ideas that will shape Dubai’s economic landscape,”
AlQama said.
Top executives from partner companies expressed support for the initiative. Oliver Grohmann of Emirates Group highlighted the importance of fostering a knowledge-based economy aligned with D33, while Ronaldo Mouchawar of Amazon emphasized piloting programs to boost economic productivity. Andro Valdes of Careem noted the gig economy’s role in enhancing efficiency, and Dino Varkey of GEMS Education celebrated the initiative as an avenue to unlock human capital and drive innovation.
The Gig Economy Sandbox aims to empower sectors requiring flexible labor solutions, driving sustainable economic growth across Dubai and the UAE while supporting businesses in adapting to new workforce trends.
