The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh20.5-billion contract to three prominent Turkish and Chinese companies—Mapa, Limak, and CRRC—for the construction of the highly anticipated Dubai Metro Blue Line.

Expected to commence operations on September 9, 2029, the launch date coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro, adding a nostalgic touch to the city's transportation history. The first metro service opened at exactly 9:09:09 PM on 9-9-2009.

Spanning 30 kilometers and comprising 14 stations, the Blue Line will feature 28 trains and is projected to carry 200,000 passengers daily by 2030, with an increase to 320,000 passengers by 2040. The new line is expected to reduce traffic congestion by 20% and offer improved connectivity between key areas such as Dubai International Airport, Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City, and Dubai Creek Harbour. Travel times will range between 10 and 25 minutes, benefiting over 46,000 passengers per hour.

The sleek, futuristic design of the new stations, with smooth, curved structures and large, oval-shaped platforms, will offer a stark contrast to the fully-enclosed stations of the Red and Green Lines. The Blue Line is part of Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to create a '20-minute city,' where essential services are within a 20-minute journey.

Property prices in areas along the Blue Line route, such as Mirdif and Dubai Silicon Oasis, are expected to rise by up to 25% due to improved connectivity. The metro expansion is expected to have a significant positive impact on the city’s urban landscape and economy.
