Dubai's Metro service is poised for a substantial expansion following the approval of a comprehensive development plan by the emirate's Executive Council.
The plan, endorsed on Sunday, charts a course to enhance the commuter rail network with a significant increase in station coverage over the next two decades.
Currently spanning 64 stations across 84 square kilometres, the Metro network is slated to grow to 96 stations encompassing 140 square kilometres by 2030. Looking further ahead, the ambitious vision aims to extend the network to 140 stations across 228 square kilometres by 2040.
This strategic initiative aligns with the visionary goals of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, aiming to elevate public transport's role significantly. Key objectives include boosting public transport's modal share to 45%, curbing carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita, and enhancing public spaces to promote pedestrian-friendly environments and shaded areas.
The expansion plan also underscores a commitment to fostering economic growth around Metro hubs, facilitating seamless interconnectivity with other modes of public transport, and enhancing the overall efficiency and convenience of sustainable transportation solutions.
Moreover, the initiative is set to incentivize developers, support the '20-minute city' concept, and cater to a growing number of commuters seeking reliable and efficient transit options.
