Dubai Municipality has become the first entity worldwide to receive the ISO 53800 certification for gender equality and women’s empowerment, awarded by Global TUV (gTUV).

The recognition underscores the emirate’s leadership in promoting inclusive workplaces and empowering women.

Announced on Emirati Women’s Day, 28 August, the milestone highlights Dubai Municipality’s alignment with the UAE’s national policies on equality, merit, and social inclusion. It also reinforces the country’s broader ‘Year of Community’ initiatives that focus on justice, cohesion, and sustainable development.

His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the achievement reflects the UAE’s commitment to embedding equality as a social and institutional value.

“This certification underscores our efforts to empower women and support their professional growth, showcasing Dubai as a global example of translating principles into tangible impact,”

he stated.

Nasser BuShehab, CEO of the Planning and Governance Sector, described the recognition as a key step in strengthening workplace culture.

“It promotes equality, career development, and work-life balance for all employees, while empowering women across all levels,”

he noted.

Azza Al Marzooqi, Director of Human Resources, added that the certification supports Dubai Municipality’s employee happiness strategy, boosting satisfaction, productivity, and talent retention, which in turn enhances public service quality.

The UAE has emerged as a global leader in gender equality, ranking 7th worldwide and first in the region on the UN Development Programme’s 2024 Gender Inequality Index, a remarkable leap from 49th in 2015.

ISO 53800, issued by Germany-based TUV, provides a comprehensive framework for workplace gender equality, covering policies, leadership empowerment, pay equity, and fair organisational practices. Dubai Municipality’s certification demonstrates the maturity of its governance frameworks and strengthens its capacity to attract and retain top talent while fostering innovation and excellence.
