Dubai Municipality has completed a major heritage development in Deira’s historic markets, creating three tourist trails spanning 1,784 metres at a cost of nearly AED9.5 million.
The project preserves the traditional character of the souqs while enhancing visitor experiences and supporting more than 500 shops in the Grand Souq area.
The initiative, part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aims to protect cultural and architectural heritage while boosting tourism and strengthening Dubai’s position as a global cultural destination. It connects seven traditional markets, including the Spice, Perfume, Carpets, and Textiles souqs, with landmarks such as the Gold Souq and Al Ahmadiya School.
Enhancements include rehabilitated public spaces, upgraded pavements, shaded seating areas, new lighting, and improved signage. Authentic local materials such as sarooj plaster were used to restore façades, maintaining the markets’ historic character.
Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency, said the project reflects Dubai’s cultural identity while supporting local traders and tourism. He highlighted that the trails offer an immersive journey blending heritage, culture, and commerce.
The completion of the heritage tourist trails underscores Dubai Municipality’s commitment to safeguarding history while driving sustainable urban development and economic growth.
