Dubai Municipality has launched a strategic sustainable waste management project in the Hatta region in collaboration with Imdaad.
The project – “Outsourcing Waste Collection, Transportation, and Recycling Services” – seeks to bolster the municipality's operations through stronger partnerships with the private sector while advancing the goals of the ‘Zero Waste in Hatta’ campaign.
The primary goal of the Hatta waste management project is to divert various waste types from landfills, promoting sustainable practices and social responsibility. By transforming the landfill into an advanced facility and distributing waste storage containers, Dubai Municipality aims to enhance waste management in Hatta. Segregated waste is transferred to treatment sites, benefiting 1,147 residential units and reducing landfill waste. The project supports Dubai's sustainability goals and encourages eco-friendly choices, contributing to the city's appeal and overall quality of life. Instructions on containers aid waste segregation and raise public awareness.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, underscores the project's alignment with strategic goals to reduce waste, increase recycling, and establish Hatta as a model city. These efforts are in line with Dubai's circular economy objectives and its Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041. Al Hajri emphasizes Dubai's global reputation for cleanliness and sustainability, highlighting the municipality's commitment to modernizing services and implementing eco-friendly projects. Dubai Municipality has expanded its partnership with Imdaad, deploying an integrated field team equipped for waste collection and recycling in Hatta, comprising 75 cleaners, supervisors, drivers, and vehicles.
During the project, Dubai Municipality engaged over 900 families, 20 educational institutions, and 300 farms in Hatta through direct outreach programs. Imdaad conducted the "My Environment" program to educate schoolchildren about recycling, waste segregation, and environmental protection. The "Environment Month Competition" involved various entities, including Hatta Sports Club, reinforcing these themes. Imdaad will organize awareness visits for students at its Farz factory in Jebel Ali. Since 2012, Dubai Municipality has outsourced waste collection, transport, and recycling services under the "My City .. My Environment" initiative in 16 subregions, promoting environmental responsibility citywide.
Over 18,000 residential units have benefited from the project, and the municipality has added 36,400 residential storage containers to promote better waste management in these areas. The civic body has also deployed 65 multi-utility machines and 300 field workers, all of which contribute further to its goal of promoting a sustainable society.
