The Dubai Racing Carnival continues to anchor the global horse racing calendar, drawing elite competitors from around the world while serving as the main pathway to the prestigious Dubai World Cup.

Horse racing in Dubai traces its roots to 1981, when early events were staged at the Camel Track under the guidance of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The sport quickly gained structure with the formation of the Dubai Racing Club in 1992 and the launch of Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.

A defining moment came in 1996 when the inaugural Dubai World Cup was won by American horse Cigar, elevating the UAE’s status in international racing.

Since 2010, the Carnival has been hosted at Meydan Racecourse, a 7.5 million square metre venue that accommodates more than 60,000 spectators. The facility features advanced racing surfaces, luxury hospitality, and world-class stabling.

Held over 12 to 16 race nights each winter, the Carnival offers substantial prize money, attracting top stables from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia. It also provides crucial preparation time for international contenders ahead of the World Cup.

Industry figures underline its significance. Trainer Helal Al Alawi described the Carnival as central to Dubai’s ambition of maintaining global racing leadership. British trainer Ed Crisford highlighted recent success with Meydaan, while George Scott pointed to Meydan’s fast tracks as ideal for international runners.

With its scale, prize pool, and global reach, the Dubai Racing Carnival continues to reinforce Dubai’s position at the forefront of the sport.
