H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, officially launched the first phase of DUBAI REEF today at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix, marking a pivotal moment in Dubai's commitment to environmental sustainability.
The event took place at Mina Rashid, with the completion of the first 1,000 purpose-built reef modules.
DUBAI REEF, an ambitious initiative under Dubai Can, aims to create the world’s largest single purpose-built reef. This phase follows the announcement of the project at COP28 in December 2023 and its pilot launch in April 2024. Over three years, 20,000 reef modules will be deployed across 600 square kilometers of Dubai’s waters to enhance marine biodiversity and support sustainable ecosystems.
The project has received significant backing from both public and private sectors. Strategic partners, including the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, DP World, Nakheel, and Emirates, are joining forces to make this vision a reality. National Ready Mix Concrete Co. is providing the materials for the modules, while Strategy& part of PwC offers expert advice on the project’s environmental governance.
The reef modules, such as the 'Arab Marine Pyramid' and 'Reef Shade,' are designed to boost marine life, including coral reefs, fish populations, and other aquatic species. The materials used ensure sustainability, with the modules expected to last over 100 years.
This project aligns with global environmental initiatives, including the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030 and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focusing on climate action and life below water.
As DUBAI REEF progresses, it reinforces Dubai’s position as a leader in innovation and sustainability, securing the future of its marine ecosystems for generations to come.
