Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced a significant increase in public transport and shared mobility users, reaching approximately 361.2 million in the first half of 2024.

This marks a 6% rise compared to 340.5 million users during the same period in 2023. The daily average number of riders increased to 1.98 million, up from 1.88 million last year.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted that Dubai Metro and taxis accounted for the largest share of public transport users, at 37% and 27% respectively, followed by public buses at 24.5%. January 2024 recorded the highest monthly ridership with 65 million users, while the subsequent months saw figures ranging between 53 and 63 million.

The Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines transported 133 million passengers in the first half of 2024. BurJuman and Union stations were the busiest, with BurJuman recording 7.8 million users and Union station 6.3 million. The Red Line’s Al Rigga station led with 6.2 million passengers, followed by Mall of the Emirates and Business Bay stations. The top performers were on the Green Line, Sharaf DG, Baniyas, and Stadium stations.

In addition to the Metro, Dubai Tram transported 4.5 million passengers, public buses carried 89.2 million, and marine transport served 9.7 million users. Shared mobility services, including e-hail vehicles and on-demand buses, accounted for 27.8 million passengers. Dubai’s taxis carried 97 million passengers in the same period.

Al Tayer attributed the growth in ridership to Dubai’s economic boom and RTA’s strategic efforts to enhance public transport options. He emphasized RTA’s commitment to developing an integrated, multi-modal transport network that connects all parts of Dubai, aiming to increase the share of public and shared transport journeys to 25% by 2030. As of the end of 2023, this share stood at 20.9%.

RTA’s continuous efforts in expanding road networks, and public transport services, and promoting alternative mobility options reflect its strategic goal of enhancing the role of public transport in Dubai's urban landscape.
