Schools across the UAE reopened their doors on Monday following a two-month summer break, leading to anticipated traffic congestion in school districts and surrounding roads.
As parents returned to their routines, the increase in drop-offs and pick-ups caused temporary bottlenecks, particularly in areas with multiple schools.
Experts and educators pointed out that traffic jams around schools often occur because some parents take longer to drop off or pick up their children. To mitigate these issues, schools have implemented several strategies to ensure smooth traffic flow. Designated parking and crossing zones have been established, and skilled security teams are on hand to manage and direct traffic effectively.
Matthew Burfield, Senior Vice President – Education at GEMS Education and Executive Principal/CEO of GEMS Founders School – Dubai, highlighted significant infrastructural improvements made by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
"When we opened this school nine years ago, there was a single-lane road at the front and no road at the back. Now, we have a six-lane highway at the front and RTA parking along the back,"
he said. Despite these advancements, challenges persist during peak times.
"We encourage parents to arrive early, as arriving all at once can create congestion. The first week is always tricky, but we will find a natural balance soon,"
Burfield added.
To address these challenges proactively, school leaders meet regularly to coordinate schedules and traffic management strategies. Burfield noted that the road near GEMS Founders is home to several schools, including GEMS Al Barsha National School and Dubai Heights Academy.
"We collaborate with all schools along this road to adjust timings and minimize overlaps, ensuring a smoother experience for everyone,"
he explained.
The use of school buses has also been emphasized as a key solution to reduce traffic congestion. Burfield noted that over two-thirds of students use school buses, which are given priority for entry and exit.
"Our bus routes across Dubai help manage traffic effectively. Buses enter and leave the school site first, which alleviates road congestion,"
he said.
In addition to logistical improvements, schools have taken steps to inform families and ensure a smooth start to the academic year.
Sarah Weaver, Principal at Mamoura British Academy, shared that the school provided a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan to families.
"Meticulous planning and excellent signage help guide parents and ensure safety during drop-off and pick-up,"
Weaver said.
Furthermore, some schools, like The Aquila School, have reminded families to park and drive safely. Principal Wayne Howsen encouraged families living nearby to walk to school if possible.
"We have shared messages about parking and driving safely and urged families to consider walking to reduce traffic,"
he said.
As schools settle into their routines, these measures aim to ease traffic congestion, enhance safety, and support a smooth transition for students and parents alike.
