Dubai Signs MoU with The Boring Company to Explore ‘Dubai Loop’ Tunnel Project
Dubai has taken a significant step toward revolutionizing its transportation network with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and US-based firm The Boring Company.
The agreement, signed in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, aims to study the implementation of the ‘Dubai Loop’ tunnel project.
The proposed 17-kilometre tunnel will feature 11 stations and is designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour, forming part of a larger plan to develop a citywide loop transportation system. The MoU, signed during the 2025 World Governments Summit (WGS), seeks to enhance cooperation in tunnel excavation and construction, leveraging advanced technologies for sustainable mobility solutions.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, and John Hering, Lead Investor and Senior Advisor to The Boring Company, formalized the agreement in the presence of senior officials. Al Tayer emphasized that the collaboration aligns with Dubai’s vision for smart and sustainable transport solutions.
“The agreement facilitates knowledge exchange and fosters innovation, ensuring Dubai remains at the forefront of advanced mobility,”
he stated.
Hering highlighted the efficiency of the loop system, noting its rapid execution, cost-effectiveness, and minimal disruption to existing infrastructure.
“The Boring Company’s integrated vertical approach streamlines operations and reduces costs, enhancing urban connectivity,”
he said.
The MoU includes research on tunnelling technology, mobility trends, and safety standards, with a focus on pioneering solutions for Dubai’s evolving transportation needs.
