The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE)’s Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau (RSB) for Electricity and Water, in cooperation with the Dubai Land Department’s Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA), organised a joint workshop that focused on enhancing the efficiency of energy and water use in buildings. The workshop aimed to support the energy efficiency policy for joint ownership properties, which was recently launched by RERA.
Enhancing the investment value of real estate units
Over 100 property stakeholders convened to strategize energy and water conservation methods, aligning with Dubai's sustainability goals and global initiatives. The collaboration, spurred by directives from UAE leadership, extends the 'Year of Sustainability' into 2024, aiming to establish Dubai as a model for green economies. Acknowledging the significance of UN Climate Change Conference outcomes hosted by the UAE, the workshop underscores joint efforts between the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Dubai Land Department’s RERA to implement energy efficiency policies. This partnership reflects Dubai's commitment to becoming a leading sustainable city, driving transformative changes in energy management and emissions reduction to realize its 2050 net-zero target.
Roadmap towards the sustainability goals
HE Eng. Marwan bin Ghalita emphasized Dubai Land Department's commitment to advancing sustainability through collaboration with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. Their joint efforts aim to align with the ambitious goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), setting a global standard for sustainability.
Mohammed Khalifa bin Hammad highlighted RERA's energy efficiency management policy, a cornerstone of the workshop, designed to enhance sustainability by reducing consumption and promoting energy-efficient practices. The policy's seven standards prioritize proactive energy management, efficient building practices, and continuous improvement through monitoring and analysis, driving Dubai towards a more sustainable future.
Buildings Energy Management Accreditation Scheme
The Buildings Energy Management Accreditation Scheme (BEMAS), presented by the RSB during the workshop, serves as a crucial tool for achieving operational sustainability in electricity and water consumption. Aligned with Dubai's energy efficiency management policy and Demand Side Management Strategy, BEMAS acts as a catalyst for improving energy efficiency in buildings. It enables building owners to optimize energy consumption, leading to financial savings and enhanced property value while promoting environmental sustainability. BEMAS benefits various stakeholders: investors see increased property value and reduced costs, tenants enjoy greater comfort and lower bills, and service providers gain opportunities for specialized services. Ultimately, BEMAS contributes to fostering a more sustainable built environment, benefiting the community at large.
Energy efficiency in the built environment
During the workshop, RERA emphasized the significance of energy efficiency in the built environment, while the Dubai World Trade Centre showcased its successful energy efficiency initiatives in its One Central project, boasting LEED gold certification for five buildings. ENGIE Solutions shared their expertise as an energy management service provider. This collaboration between RSB, RERA, and private sector stakeholders signals Dubai's commitment to a sustainable real estate sector, benefiting the environment, economy, and community. RSB aims to support Dubai's Demand Side Management Strategy for energy through such partnerships. RERA's proactive stance on sustainability, exemplified by the energy efficiency management policy for joint ownership properties, reinforces Dubai's dedication to sustainable development in the real estate market.
