The Dubai World Cup 2024 – the world’s richest horse race for thoroughbreds – tops the list of international sports events being hosted in the emirate through the Holy Month of Ramadan this year.
The Dubai World Cup, inaugurated in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is a prestigious horse racing event held annually at Meydan Racecourse. Featuring a Group 1 flat race on dirt over 2,000 meters, it's considered a highlight in global horse racing, with a purse of US$12 million since 2019, making it the world's richest horse race. This year, it concludes the Dubai World Cup Night on the last Saturday of March. Dubai is also hosting 32 other international and local sporting events, including the 'World Strongman' Championship on March 28th, organized by the Emirates Sports Group at Dubai Sports City.
The upcoming World Strongman Championship in Dubai will feature competitions in two weight categories for men (up to 95kg and up to 110kg) and one for women (up to 75kg). Events include the Lift Relay (with Stone over Bar, Dumbbell Lift, Axle Deadlift, and Log Lift) and the Carry Relay (with challenges like Sandbag Carry, Yoke Race, and Farmer’s Walk). Additionally, there will be a competition for the Fedor Konyukhov Cup involving a 500-meter rowing machine challenge. Following this, the Masters Cup Polo Championship at Al Habtoor Polo Club and Resort will take place from April 1st to 6th, attracting top polo players with handicaps ranging from 6 to 8.
Largest sporting event in Hatta
The Hatta Ramadan Sports Tournament, supported by the Farjan Fund, continues this week at Al Dhahra School for Basic and Secondary Education in Hatta, featuring competitions in eight sports including futsal, volleyball, beach volleyball, badminton, road running races, weightlifting, walking race for senior citizens, and e-sports.
Additionally, the Al Wafa Ramadan Football Tournament at Al Warqa Park, the Legends Football Cup at Sports by Amana, and the Al Quoz Ramadan Football Tournament at Al Quoz Park are ongoing. The Abena Pirates Diving Cup spans March 26th to April 4th, while a charity cycling race supporting Gaza war victims takes place at DX Bike Meydan on March 28th. The Legend Star Women’s Padel will be held at Raleigh Club on March 31st.
NAS tournament continues
The Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament continues until the end of March at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, concluding with the volleyball competition final on March 31st.
GEMS Wellington Academy on Al Khail Road hosts the Ramadan Sports Championship and Football League until April 7th. The Dubai Club for People of Determination holds its Ramadan Football Championship until April 12th. Various events like the Ramadan mini-football tournament at El Partido Hall and the Americano Ramadan Padel League at Padel Pro Club run until mid-April.
Other events include the Ramadan Sports Forum at Bates University, Dubai Police Ramadan Cycling Games Championship, Allegiance to Zayed Chess Championship, Ramadan Polo Challenge Cup, Dubai Police Football League, Ramadan Communities Championship, Ramadan Triathlon Football Championship, Ramadan Team Chess Championship, Ramadan Goals Corporate Championship, Ramadan Endurance Cycling Race, and Fitz Ramadan Sports Festival. Additionally, there are events like the Ramadan Walking March, Open Ice Hockey Cup, and Magic Ramadan Padel Championship held across Dubai.
