Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced a landmark achievement in sustainable development with Al Rayan Masjid in Hatta becoming the world’s first mosque to receive the prestigious LEED ZERO certification.
This pioneering mosque sets a new standard for green architecture in places of worship, highlighting Dubai’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, expressed pride in the mosque's accomplishment.
“Al Rayan Masjid supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the sustainable development goals for Hatta, reflecting our commitment to creating religious and community spaces that harmonize with the environment and contribute to our Net-Zero by 2050 targets,”
he stated.
Al Rayan Masjid, previously recognized for its LEED v4 Platinum certification, now leads with LEED ZERO Energy certification. It generates at least 150% of its annual energy needs through high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on its parking structure and ablution area. The surplus energy produced is fed back into the grid, embodying the principles of net positive energy.
The mosque spans 1,050 square meters and accommodates over 600 worshippers. It features a 25-meter-high minaret, parking for vehicles and motorcycles, facilities for People of Determination, and a Green Charger station for electric vehicles. Additionally, solar panels and a water treatment unit are used for irrigation and cleaning, with recycled materials incorporated in construction.
DEWA's adherence to international standards ensures excellent air quality through a highly efficient air purification system, creating a sustainable and healthy environment inside the mosque. This milestone aligns with Dubai's vision of becoming a global leader in clean energy and green economy.
