Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced a significant increase in Dubai’s energy demand for 2024.

The demand reached 59,594 gigawatt hours (GWh), marking a 5.4% rise compared to 56,516 GWh in 2023. This surge reflects the growing population and expanding economic activities in the emirate.

Al Tayer emphasized that DEWA is proactively enhancing its transmission and distribution networks to meet this rising demand. The authority continues to develop world-class infrastructure, aligning with Dubai’s rapid growth in both population and economic sectors.

"Thanks to the wise directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai has become a global city and a preferred destination for living, working, business, and tourism,"

said Al Tayer.

As part of its sustainability initiatives, DEWA has also increased its installed generation capacity to 17.179 GW, with clean energy now accounting for 20% of the total installed power generation capacity. This development is in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim for 100% clean energy production by 2050.

Notably, DEWA also saw a 3.4% increase in its peak demand, reaching 10.76 GW in 2024. This uptick further underlines the importance of sustainable growth in energy infrastructure to support Dubai’s dynamic development and global competitiveness.
