Eid Al Adha 2023 in the UAE: When can you expect confirmation of a 5- or 6-day weekend?
The duration of the Eid Al Adha holidays in the UAE will be contingent upon the sighting of the Moon, which determines the beginning and conclusion of Islamic Hijri calendar months.
The UAE's longest break of the year is fast approaching, with the holiday commemorating the Islamic festival of Eid Al Adha just preceding the two-month summer break. This presents residents with additional opportunities for vacations and leisure. The only lingering question is whether the weekend will span five or six days, as its duration hinges on the sighting of the Moon, which governs the beginning and conclusion of Islamic Hijri calendar months.
Probable dates for the break
The designated holiday for celebrating the festival spans from Dhul Hijjah 9 to 12 according to the Islamic calendar. However, the corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar depend on the sighting of the Moon. Astronomical calculations indicate that the break is expected to occur from Tuesday, June 27, to Friday, June 30. Considering the inclusion of the regular Saturday-Sunday weekend, this would result in a six-day break. In the event that Dhul Hijjah 9 occurs on Wednesday, June 28, there is a possibility of a five-day break, which would encompass the weekend as well.
When will it be confirmed?
The definitive confirmation regarding the duration of the weekend will be determined on Dhul Qaidah 29, which falls on June 18. Currently, we are in the 11th month of the Hijri calendar, Dhul Qaidah, with today being Dhul Qaidah 12.
Traditionally, Muslims search for the sighting of the crescent Moon on the 29th day of each month. Dhul Qaidah 29 is anticipated to occur on June 18. If the Moon is sighted on that night, Dhul Hijjah will commence on June 19, resulting in a six-day break starting from June 27.
However, if the Moon is not observed on June 18, Dhul Hijjah will commence on June 20, leading to a five-day weekend starting from June 28.
In summary, the certainty regarding whether it will be a five- or six-day weekend will be known on Dhul Qaidah 29, which is June 18.
Travel demand
There is a significant demand for travel among residents who are looking to take a vacation during the Eid break. Various airlines are promoting special flight offers to neighboring countries, with return fares as low as Dh2,450. Additionally, full holiday packages are available starting from Dh2,600.
