Emirates Engineering has set a new benchmark in the country’s aviation sector by becoming the first organisation in the UAE to receive Design Organisation Approval from the General Civil Aviation Authority, granting it direct authority to design and certify major aircraft modifications.
The approval allows the GCAA to independently review and process Emirates Engineering’s work on major changes made through Supplemental Type Certificates. It marks a shift in the nation’s regulatory landscape and strengthens the UAE’s position in global aviation.
Adel Al Redha, Emirates Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer, said the milestone gives the airline greater control over product development, specifications, and timelines. He added that the approval comes at a strategic moment as the airline expands its engineering presence at Dubai World Central.
Aqeel Al Zarooni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at the GCAA, said the accreditation reflects the maturity of the UAE’s aviation regulatory framework and supports the growth of local engineering capabilities. He noted that the move will enable more efficient and competitive major modification work across the national aviation sector.
The approval expands Emirates Engineering’s remit from minor changes to complex cabin reconfigurations and major design updates across both Airbus and Boeing aircraft. It reduces reliance on external manufacturers and design firms and provides stronger control over cost and delivery schedules.
Emirates Engineering has strengthened its design team over the past six months and plans further growth as it builds long-term capability. The new approval also supports the airline’s fleet refurbishment programme and future ambitions in component design and local manufacturing.
With this milestone, Emirates joins a select group of airlines worldwide with in-house major design and certification expertise, reinforcing the UAE’s growing influence in the aerospace industry.
