The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has launched a AED750 million project to expand and upgrade Emirates Road, aiming to ease congestion and enhance connectivity across the northern Emirates.

The two-year project will expand the road from three to five lanes in each direction over a 25-kilometre stretch from Al Badee Interchange to Umm Al Quwain.

The upgrade will increase capacity by 65 percent, allowing the road to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour. A major feature includes the redevelopment of Interchange No. 7 with six new directional bridges spanning 12.6 kilometres, boosting its capacity to 13,200 vehicles per hour. Service roads covering 3.4 kilometres will also be constructed to improve traffic flow.

Officials said the project is expected to cut travel times by up to 45 percent for commuters traveling between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai. By reducing congestion, the initiative will also help lower emissions while supporting trade and the movement of goods across the Emirates.

Youssef Abdullah, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Federal Infrastructure Projects Sector, said the project reflects the UAE’s commitment to sustainable, innovative solutions that meet the needs of population growth and economic development.

During construction, phased traffic management strategies and detours will be implemented in coordination with local authorities to minimise disruption. The Ministry also plans to keep commuters updated through a dedicated communication plan and digital platforms.

The project marks a significant step in the UAE’s broader vision to develop an integrated road network that strengthens connectivity, reduces environmental impact, and enhances the overall quality of life.
