Empower Partners with MHI Thermal Systems to Boost District Cooling Capacity in Dubai
Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation PJSC (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, has entered into a significant agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems).
The contract, signed on October 8, 2024, in Dubai by H.E. Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, and Mr. Yoshihiro Ito, President of MHI Thermal Systems, involves the supply of advanced chillers with a total capacity of up to 100,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT).
Under the agreement, MHI Thermal Systems will provide 18 energy-efficient water-cooled centrifugal chillers with an initial capacity of 56,250 RT, set to commence in 2025. These chillers will be utilized across various district cooling projects in Dubai, including the Deira Waterfront Development, Jumeirah Village, and Al Sufouh. The contract also allows Empower to increase its order by December 31, 2024, potentially raising the total capacity to 100,000 RT.
This marks the second collaboration between Empower and MHI Thermal Systems, following a previous agreement in late 2021 for chillers that supplied 100,000 RT to multiple cooling plants.
Ahmad Bin Shafar highlighted the deal as a crucial step toward enhancing the district cooling sector and supporting a carbon-free future through energy-efficient solutions. He reiterated Empower’s commitment to leveraging innovative technologies to improve its 87 plants and contribute to Dubai’s sustainable development goals.
Mr. Yoshihiro Ito expressed pride in supporting Empower’s objectives and emphasized MHI Thermal Systems’ dedication to maximizing energy efficiency in line with the UAE’s strategic vision to reduce energy consumption by 30% by 2030. Following the signing, the Empower team hosted MHI Thermal Systems for a tour of the Guinness World Record-holding Business Bay district cooling plant, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.
