The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has announced the launch of its new transformational initiative, the National Programme for Qualifying Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers (TAHYAA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior.
This pioneering project aims to bolster Emirati capabilities in managing nuclear and radiological emergencies across various sectors in the UAE. TAHYAA plans to train nearly 3,000 emergency workers, including first responders from the Civil Defence, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence, and other relevant entities, from July 2024 to June 2025.
The programme is grounded in the UAE National Qualification for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers, developed by FANR in partnership with the National Qualification Centre (NQC) of the Ministry of Education. The qualification framework encompasses a broad range of technical topics, such as radiation physics, radiation detection, and radioactive decontamination. It provides official qualifications and certifications to all personnel involved in nuclear and radiological emergency response and management in the UAE.
TAHYAA is a key project within the performance agreements for 2023-2024, designed to implement national priorities and support the next phase of the UAE's development. It aligns with the vision "We the UAE 2031," which aspires to make the UAE the safest and most secure country in the world.
Building and strengthening the capacity of the emergency workers is a key element to ensure the timely response to any emergency to ensure the protection of the people and the environment. The National Programme for Qualifying Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers (TAHYAA) will play a key role in building such capacity in collaboration with our partners and harnessing their relevant hands-on experience to equip them with the necessary tools to address any nuclear or radiological emergency,

The UAE boasts a robust emergency preparedness and response system, praised by international bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). TAHYAA is expected to further bolster the national capacity to handle potential nuclear or radiological emergencies, reinforcing the country's readiness and resilience in this critical area.
