flydubai has ordered 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace to power its upcoming fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, marking a major step in the airline’s move into long haul operations.

The agreement was signed at the Dubai Airshow 2025 and includes spare engines and a long-term services package.

The deal supports flydubai’s wider growth strategy as it prepares to expand capacity on existing routes and add new long haul destinations. Founded in 2008, the Dubai-based carrier has grown into a network of more than 135 destinations across 57 countries and is now progressing toward its first widebody operations.

The airline selected the GEnx-1B for its performance, durability and fuel efficiency, qualities that are seen as essential for operating in the region’s demanding environments. GE Aerospace’s GEnx family is the company’s fastest-selling high-thrust engine series, accumulating more than 62 million flight hours since its entry into service in 2011.

flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said the reliability of its engines is central to the airline’s expansion plans as it prepares to introduce the Boeing 787 to its fleet. He noted that GE Aerospace will play a key role as the carrier enters a new phase of growth.

GE Aerospace executive Russell Stokes said the company is proud to support flydubai’s move into widebody operations, adding that the GEnx engines will bring efficiency and dependability to the growing fleet.

flydubai placed its first 787-9 order at the 2023 Dubai Airshow, diversifying beyond its all-737 fleet. The addition of the fuel-efficient Dreamliner is expected to help the airline meet shifting market needs and support sustained network expansion.
