FNC Adopts Recommendations on AI for Governance and Innovation
The Federal National Council (FNC) convened its 3rd meeting of the second ordinary session of the 18th legislative chapter, chaired by Speaker Saqr Gobash, to deliberate on the government's artificial intelligence (AI) policy.
The council adopted key recommendations, emphasizing the need to update legislation governing technical aspects and data protection to reflect AI advancements. Proposals also included creating frameworks for government data governance covering classification, storage, exchange, and privacy, ensuring a balance between transparency and confidentiality.
The FNC called for a unified platform to facilitate data sharing between public and private sectors, as well as initiatives to empower startups in AI with financing, marketing, and technical support. It stressed the importance of public-private partnerships for AI research and development to enhance the UAE's global competitiveness and measure the efficiency of AI-driven government services.
Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work, highlighted the UAE's AI journey, which began with e-government in 2002 and culminated in the 2017 Artificial Intelligence Strategy. He outlined an eight-objective plan executed in three phases to establish a strong AI foundation, implement initiatives, and lead the sector globally. Training programs in collaboration with the University of Oxford aim to prepare citizens for AI-driven jobs, aligning with the UAE Vision 2071.
The recommendations were referred back to the FNC’s Committee on Technology, Energy, Mineral Resources, and Public Utilities for further refinement before submission to the government.
