The Federal National Council (FNC) on Wednesday adopted a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening the national media’s role in shaping public discourse and reinforcing Emirati identity.
The session, chaired by FNC Speaker Saqr Ghobash, was held at the Council’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
Key recommendations included the Emiratisation of leadership and supervisory roles in both public and private media sectors, along with the development of second- and third-tier national talent. The FNC also called for greater integration of experienced Emirati media professionals in training, advisory, and development roles.
The council urged stronger collaboration with academic institutions to align media curricula with market demands, and proposed the establishment of an advisory committee comprising experts in national identity and media.
A major structural recommendation was the designation of a single media authority to streamline oversight and implementation, alongside activating the National Media Office’s (NMO) mandate and boosting the UAE Media Council’s coordination role.
Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of both the NMO and the UAE Media Council, highlighted ongoing reforms to modernise the sector. He confirmed that over five coordination sessions have already been held with media stakeholders nationwide and that a new media portal will soon launch to support talent development, registration, and participation.
He added that cooperation with NAFIS has already produced over 60 Emirati media graduates and that a committee of 50 national media experts is shaping a new media framework, including a centralised talent database.
Al Hamed stressed the importance of accurate content, the responsible use of social platforms, and promoting Arabic while engaging global audiences.
“Our goal is a media sector that reflects the UAE’s identity, values, and global standing,”
he said.
