Ford is making a significant leap in automotive technology by fully integrating Google's Android Automotive platform into its vehicles. The 2025 Explorer is the first Ford model to feature this new "Digital Experience," designed to keep drivers connected without needing to glance at their phones.

Earlier this year, the Lincoln Nautilus SUV offered a preview of this innovative software, showcasing a 48-inch panoramic screen dominating the dashboard. The Explorer's setup is more modest, featuring a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, yet it still boasts the powerful Android Automotive platform with many of the same advanced capabilities.

The 2025 Explorer includes built-in Google Maps navigation that can display on both the main screen and the instrument cluster. The infotainment package also supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, surpassing rivals like General Motors in phone integration.

The system features the Google Play Store, allowing owners to download numerous car-friendly apps and services. Voice commands enable control over various vehicle functions, such as setting the temperature or finding a destination. For those who prefer alternatives to automotive digital assistants, Ford offers Amazon's Alexa as an option, providing hands-free control over texting, calling, scheduling, smart home controls, and even requesting specific radio stations.

Ford describes this system as a way to "access your digital life inside the car," enhancing the driving experience even when parked. The company emphasizes that the new system reduces the need for drivers to look at their phones, promoting safer driving habits.

Externally, the 2025 Explorer receives a facelift with updated front grilles and rear lighting. Different trim levels, starting at $39,755, feature distinct grille designs ranging from mesh patterns to satin chrome wings.

Ford's journey to Android Automotive integration began with its partnership with Google announced in 2021, culminating in the "Ford Digital Experience" unveiled in January 2024. While the Explorer is the first to feature this new system, Ford's electric F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E are next in line to receive similar Android-based systems, albeit with different screen layouts and larger, vertically oriented panels.
