The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has announced remarkable achievements for its digital VAT refund systems in 2024, reflecting significant progress in its digital transformation strategy.

Key services, including VAT refunds for UAE nationals constructing new residences and VAT refunds for tourists, saw enhanced performance due to continuous system upgrades.

Since the inception of the VAT refund service for UAE nationals building new homes, 34,900 applications worth AED 2.9 billion have been approved as of the end of 2024. This marks a 27.52% annual increase in approved applications and a 32% rise in refund values compared to 2023. During 2024 alone, 7,520 applications worth AED 704.38 million were processed. The service has shown steady growth, with annual applications rising from 270 in 2018 to over 8,000 in 2023.

For tourists, the VAT refund system expanded significantly. The number of retail outlets linked to the system increased by 9% in 2024, reaching 17,847 outlets. Additionally, 15 new self-service kiosks were installed across airports, malls, and hotels, bringing the total to 97 kiosks by the end of 2024, an 18.3% increase over the previous year. These kiosks enable tourists to process refunds in under two minutes.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, Director-General of the FTA, highlighted the authority’s commitment to enhancing digital systems in line with the UAE’s smart transformation strategy. He emphasized the FTA’s role in streamlining tax services and ensuring high customer satisfaction.

Building on these successes, the FTA aims to introduce more digital initiatives in 2025, further aligning with the nation’s goal of proactive and seamless government services.
