The Gulf Cooperation Council has recorded strong progress in the Circular Carbon Economy Index, with the region’s average score rising to 41.5 in 2024 from 37.7 the previous year, according to data from GCC-Stat.

The index, which tracks 125 countries worldwide on their journey to net-zero emissions, ranked three GCC nations at the top of the Middle East and North Africa region. It measures both performance in emission-mitigation technologies and readiness to shift to a low-carbon economy.

In 2024, the GCC’s Performance Index score climbed to 35.8 from 29.7, while the Enablers Index reached 47.2, up from 45.6. The region also expanded its role in renewable energy, with its share of global installed design capacity rising to 0.43 percent, compared with 0.03 percent in 2015.

The Supreme Council of the GCC reaffirmed its commitment to the energy transition by investing sustainably in hydrocarbons while advancing the four pillars of the Circular Carbon Economy framework: reduce, reuse, recycle, and remove.
