Google Photos Introduces Major Gemini AI Feature 'Ask Photos'

What's New: Google is integrating its Gemini AI model into various services, including Google Photos, with a new feature called "Ask Photos." This feature allows users to perform complex, context-aware searches in their photo library using natural language queries.

At Google I/O, AI was the main highlight, with several AI features announced, including "Ask Photos" for Google Photos. This feature enables users to search their photos and ask questions using simple natural language.

"Ask Photos" goes beyond basic queries, understanding context and answering more complex questions. For example, it can find photos of your child treading water or show the entire process of learning to swim, including receiving a swimming certificate, by understanding the context of the activity.

At Google I/O, the "Ask Photos" feature in Google Photos was demonstrated, showcasing its ability to search for photos of vacation spots, landmarks, and even specific items like a license plate number using natural language queries. Google CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated the AI's capability by asking for his license plate number, which the app successfully retrieved based on location data and frequency of appearance.

This feature, while potentially unsettling for some, highlights the sophistication of Google's Gemini AI model and its usefulness in managing extensive photo libraries. The focus on natural language input aligns with the trend towards "multi-modality" AI, which processes text, audio, and video. OpenAI's recent demonstration of its GPT-4o (Omni) model further underscores this trend.

As generative AI models continue to rise, Google's integration of AI into its services is expected. The competition in the AI landscape is intensifying, with OpenAI's Omni model and Apple's upcoming generative AI announcements at the Worldwide Developer Conference.
