H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, recently reviewed transformative projects by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aimed at enhancing Dubai's urban mobility and infrastructure.
These initiatives include the AED16 billion 2024-2027 Main Roads Development Plan, set to launch 22 projects that will benefit over six million residents and boost Dubai’s road network.
Among the highlights, Sheikh Hamdan reviewed advancements in autonomous transport and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in traffic management, aimed at improving transport efficiency across Dubai. Public transport developments, including Dubai’s cycling network expansion, were also discussed. Since 2006, Dubai’s road network has more than doubled to 18,990 lane-kilometers, while cycling tracks have surged from 9 km to 557 km, marking a 6,088 percent increase.
The review also covered upcoming road projects like the Latifa bint Hamdan Street and Meydan Road developments, which are expected to cut travel times significantly. The Al Mustaqbal Street upgrade, with new bridges and tunnels, aims to reduce delays by converting the Trade Centre Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection, bringing travel time from 12 minutes to just 90 seconds.
Dubai’s tram network is set for expansion, with a study underway on trackless trams using virtual tracks and AI for traffic control. Sheikh Hamdan also reviewed the “Green Road” system, an AI-driven safety monitor for public buses, which has improved traffic safety by 54 percent.
These strategic developments reflect Dubai's commitment to sustainable and advanced urban transport, positioning the city as a global leader in smart mobility.
