The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), is set to launch HCT-SAT1 this January, marking a historic milestone as the first satellite entirely designed by HCT students.
This ambitious project engaged 34 students across engineering and media disciplines, supported by nine faculty members and MBRSC experts. Over a year, the team worked on satellite design, assembly, integration, and rigorous testing, culminating in launch preparations. Media students contributed to marketing efforts, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of the initiative.
Dr. Faisal Alayyan, HCT President and CEO, highlighted the project’s significance, stating,
“This collaboration reflects our commitment to empowering Emirati talent in space science and technology, supporting the UAE’s vision to lead globally in space exploration.”
He also emphasized the hands-on learning experience for students and the project's alignment with real-world applications.
Salem Humaid Al Marri, Director-General of MBRSC, lauded the initiative, calling it a vital step in integrating educational institutions into the UAE’s growing space sector. He noted that the HCT-SAT1 project showcases the potential of Emirati youth to excel in advanced technologies while strengthening the UAE’s position as a hub for innovation and scientific research.
The nanosatellite, designed for Earth observation, represents a leap forward in applied education and space exploration. A team from HCT will travel to the United States later this month to oversee the satellite's launch, underscoring the UAE’s ambition to nurture a new generation of leaders in space science.
