Heriot-Watt University Dubai will host the first Social Capital 2026 conference from 26–28 March 2026, bringing together leading academics, practitioners, and policymakers to explore how trust, networks, and relationships can strengthen societies worldwide.
Organised by the International Social Capital Association, the three-day event marks the launch of a new global platform dedicated to advancing research and dialogue on social capital. The programme will feature keynote speeches, workshops, and panel discussions, highlighting the role of human connection in shaping resilient communities and democratic systems.
Among the keynote speakers is Robert D. Putnam, renowned political scientist and Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. Widely recognised for his influential works Bowling Alone and The Upswing, Putnam has redefined global understanding of civic engagement and was awarded the 2012 National Humanities Medal by former U.S. President Barack Obama.
Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai, said the conference represents a rare opportunity to hear directly from the field’s most distinguished voices.

The event aims to explore how social capital fosters economic opportunities, strengthens democracy, and enhances social cohesion. Tristan Claridge, Director of the Institute of Social Capital, described the gathering as a “global stage where ideas about social capital are shared, challenged, and refined.”
With its international lineup of experts, Social Capital 2026 is set to become a cornerstone forum for advancing knowledge and collaboration in building more resilient and thriving societies.
