If you're a new Dubai resident holding a driving licence from your home country, the prospect of obtaining a new driving permit in Dubai might seem daunting. The good news is that you may be eligible for a direct licence exchange without needing to attend driving schools or take tests.

Eligibility and Requirements

To convert your existing driving permit to a UAE licence, you must present the following documents:

  • Emirates ID
  • Original driving licence
  • Legal Arabic translation of your driving licence
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your sponsor
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Completed application form
  • Valid eye test results from an RTA-accredited eye test centre

How to Apply

You can apply for the licence conversion through the RTA website or at any RTA Customer Happiness Centre.

Online Application:

  1. Visit the RTA website and log in with your Emirates ID, passport details, or traffic file number.
  2. Click 'Apply for a New Driving Licence or a New Category Based on Exchanging Licence.'
  3. Verify your identity with an OTP sent to your phone number.
  4. Specify the country where your driving licence was issued and enter the licence details.
  5. Attach a copy of your driving licence and submit the application.
  6. Pay the required fees using a debit or credit card.

In-Person Application:

  1. Visit an RTA Customer Happiness Centre.
  2. Submit the required documents.
  3. Request to add the required category to your driving licence.
  4. Pay the necessary fees.

For Singaporean residents, applications must be made through accredited driving institutes, including booking an appointment for the knowledge test.

  • Dh200 to open a file with RTA
  • Dh600 for the issuance of the new Dubai licence
  • Dh50 for the traffic manual
  • Dh20 or more for 'Knowledge and Innovation' fees

For Singaporean residents:

  • Dh200 for opening a training file with RTA
  • Dh100 for a learning application
  • Dh50 for the traffic handbook
  • Dh400 for the knowledge test
  • Dh300 for the issuance of the driving licence
  • Dh20 or more for 'Knowledge and Innovation' fees

Claiming Your Licence

Present your original driving licence and Emirates ID at any RTA Customer Happiness Centre. Once verified, your new licence will be printed and handed to you. If you use an Apple device, you can receive your electronic licence via the Apple Wallet through the RTA Dubai App.

Validity

  • Two years for residents 21 years and older.
  • One year for residents under 21 years old.
