The first Dubai International Library Conference (DILC) officially kicked off on November 15th, bringing together more than 70 speakers from over 27 countries to discuss the evolving role of libraries in today’s digital age.
Organized by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, the event runs through November 17th, with a central theme of “Our Libraries: Past, Present, and Future.”
Mohammed Ahmad Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to advancing the library sector and promoting knowledge-sharing.
"Libraries act as bridges between cultures, guardians of cultural heritage, and catalysts for education and intellectual progress,"
he stated.
The conference features a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Dr. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the UAE President, and Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Also attending are key figures such as Sharon Memis, Secretary General of the International Federation of Library Associations, and Dr. Kristine Stewart, Associate Professor at Zayed University.
Nearly 2,000 participants from diverse backgrounds are engaging in over 66 workshops and panel discussions. Topics range from artificial intelligence in library services to archive preservation, sustainable libraries, and the role of philanthropy in book access. On the first day, sessions explored the opportunities AI presents for libraries, while the second day highlighted the readiness of libraries to confront future challenges, including cyberattacks.
The conference also features an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge library technologies and innovations, offering a platform for companies and experts to collaborate on digital transformation and sustainable solutions.
