The inaugural Special Olympics UAE Games kicked off at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), with nationwide participation of over 600 athletes from across the UAE.
The Games will run from 7th to 10th June, as athletes compete in six different sports: bowling, badminton, basketball, football, powerlifting, and e-sports.
Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, celebrates the success of the Unified Schools UAE Games, marking the launch of its second phase. He emphasizes the athletes' resilience and the power of sports in fostering inclusion and unity. Grateful for leadership support and sponsor contributions, he aims to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, thanking all involved, including coaches, medical staff, and family members.
Health Screenings with 160 doctors and medical volunteers
The UAE Games will feature various health activities from the Special Olympics UAE Health Program, including health screenings covering various aspects such as feet, hearing, oral, dental, mental health, and eye checks. Over 160 doctors and volunteers from the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Algeria will participate in training sessions to enhance their ability to provide compassionate healthcare to People of Determination with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, in collaboration with Special Olympics MENA.
Community Events
The UAE Games offers additional activities alongside main competitions, promoting community engagement. Partner support enables diverse sports events for all, emphasizing inclusivity. Activities like bowling with the Ministry of Community Development, basketball, football with Zayed Higher Organization, and unified experiences by Jam Academy foster unity and participation.
Local Golisano Health Leadership Awards 2024
During the UAE Games, the winners of the highly acclaimed Local Golisano Health Leadership Award will be announced. This award represents the highest accolade offered by Special Olympics for organisations that contribute to the expansion of inclusive and compassionate healthcare across the country. The Golisano Health Leadership Award is also the most prestigious award across the inclusive health sector and Special Olympics International on a global scale.
Strategic Partnerships across the Private and Public Sector
The inaugural Special Olympics UAE Games, in collaboration with local sports federations and councils, promotes the inclusion of People of Determination through sports. Supported by various organizations including ADNOC, Aldar Properties, and SEHA, the event encompasses logistics, transportation, equipment provision, and health screenings. Emirati Marshalls provide crucial volunteer assistance.
