Instagram and Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, announced major updates to their video platforms just as TikTok faced a temporary US ban due to national security concerns.

Instagram’s New Video Editing App

Instagram revealed a new video editing app, Edits, set to launch in February. Announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Edits will feature advanced tools for video creation, including green screens, overlays, transitions, and the ability to store and edit drafts. This move comes as TikTok briefly went offline over the weekend due to a federal law mandating its parent company, ByteDance, to divest US operations.

Instagram, already a beneficiary of TikTok bans in markets like India, is leveraging this uncertainty to attract creators. The platform even ran ads targeting TikTok users in Apple’s App Store during the downtime.

Musk’s X Introduces Video Tab

Musk’s X introduced a dedicated video tab in its app, offering an "immersive home for videos," including live streaming, video podcasts, and long-form content. This feature, available in the US starting Sunday, reflects X’s push to expand into diverse online content formats.

TikTok’s Uncertain Future

TikTok restored its US service after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to delay the ban and explore a joint venture, with US-based owners acquiring 50% of the company. Despite the temporary relief, TikTok’s long-term prospects remain unclear as regulatory and geopolitical challenges loom.

Competition Heats Up

Instagram’s Reels and the launch of Edits position it as a strong alternative for TikTok users and creators. Meanwhile, Musk’s X continues to diversify its offerings, challenging established players in the video content space.

These developments mark a pivotal moment in the race to dominate short-form video content, with platforms vying for creators amid TikTok's uncertain future.
