ITS World Congress Highlights AI’s Role in Transforming Global Transport Safety and Sustainability

The second day of the 30th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress and Exhibition in Dubai saw a focus on the integration of AI to ensure the safety, resilience, and trustworthiness of global mobility systems.

Moderated by Young Tae Kim, Secretary General of the International Transport Forum (ITF), the plenary session tackled the evolving role of AI in safeguarding transport infrastructure and preparing cities for natural disasters and incidents.

Jim Misener, Senior Director at Qualcomm Technologies, USA, emphasised the need for robust connectivity systems capable of alerting drivers to road hazards and ensuring safe evacuations. Misener also addressed the environmental challenges linked to modern road management and the importance of sustainable infrastructure.

Susanna Zammataro, Director General of the International Road Federation (IRF), highlighted the necessity for extensive research to enhance road safety, urging for collaboration between transport companies and governments to develop flexible policies and share knowledge effectively.

Representing Abu Dhabi Mobility, Abdullah Al Marzouqi, spoke about the rapid transformation of cities and the need for smart, AI-driven mobility systems to meet safety standards and sustainability goals.

Dr. Markus Oeser, President of Germany’s Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), and Joanna M. Pinkerton of HNTB, USA, further discussed the importance of digitalised mobility systems in improving road safety, stressing that AI must provide valuable data for individuals and institutions to predict and respond to traffic incidents.

Japan’s Takeru Ito also shared insights on the country’s digital roadmap, focusing on the critical role of semiconductors in enhancing vehicle efficiency.

The session underscored the potential of AI to revolutionise global transport systems, ensuring safety, sustainability, and resilience in an ever-changing world.
