The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) today announced the successful completion of phase 2 of the second analog study under the UAE Analog Programme, as part of NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) Campaign 7 Mission 2.
Emirati Shareef AlRomaithi and crew completed a 45-day mission in NASA's HERA habitat, simulating space conditions to study isolation and confinement effects. They conducted scientific research, including a VR Mars walk and communication delay management, egressing at 2:20 AM (UAE time) on Tuesday.
Following their egress, the crew will continue to remain at Johnson Space Center for seven days. During this period, they will fill out post-mission surveys and engage in discussions with HERA managers and scientists along with contributing data needed for studies involving crew dynamics and health.
H.E. Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General, MBRSC, said,
"Completing this phase of the analog study marks significant progress in human space exploration, enhancing astronaut readiness for deep space. The UAE Analog Programme, with NASA and academia, highlights the UAE's dedication to space technology, scientific research, and fostering local expertise."
Adnan AlRais, Assistant Director General - Space Operations and Exploration Sector, MBRSC, said,
"Participating in this analog study enriched our spaceflight research, integrating diverse methodologies and perspectives. This collaboration enhances our understanding and preparedness for future Moon, Mars, and beyond missions, providing invaluable insights to ensure astronaut safety and mission success."
Sharing his experience, Shareef AlRomaithi, Analog Crewmember, said,
"Participating in this analog study has been a journey of discovery, highlighting the challenges of long-duration space missions. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to crucial research and proud to represent the UAE in this international effort."
The second analog study under the UAE Analog Programme is part of a comprehensive four-phase analog study, consisting of 18 human health studies on Earth, aimed at understanding the physiological, behavioural, and psychological responses of crew members in space-like conditions.
AlRomaithi is part of the second group of volunteers to participate in an analog study in HERA this year. The first phase of the second analog study of the UAE Analog Programme was completed on 11 March 2024. The third and fourth phases will begin on 9 August 2024 and 1 November 2024, respectively.
