The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has unveiled the first images captured by its MBZ-SAT and Etihad-SAT satellites, marking a major milestone in the UAE’s growing satellite imaging capabilities and coinciding with World Space Week 2025.
The release highlights the UAE’s advancement in Earth observation technology, reinforcing its ability to deliver world-class data for civil, environmental, and infrastructure applications. The two satellites represent complementary technologies that together provide a comprehensive view of the planet.
MBZ-SAT, named in honour of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was launched in January 2025 as the region’s most advanced optical imaging satellite. Developed by Emirati engineers, with 90 percent of its mechanical structures manufactured locally, it features one of the highest-resolution cameras in the region and advanced propulsion and navigation systems that enable rapid image delivery within two hours of capture.
Etihad-SAT, launched in March 2025, is MBRSC’s first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. Capable of capturing high-resolution images in all weather and lighting conditions, it supports applications in disaster response, maritime navigation, and precision agriculture.
Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, said the achievement reflects the leadership’s vision and the expertise of Emirati engineers, while Director-General Salem Humaid Al Marri noted that the satellites form part of a unified national capability in satellite development and Earth observation.
With the combined optical and radar imaging systems, MBRSC has strengthened the UAE’s position as a pioneer in space technology, offering advanced data solutions that support global efforts in sustainability, climate monitoring, and smart infrastructure.
