Minister of Climate Change Engages with Farmers to Boost Agricultural Sustainability

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, recently participated in the UAE Farmers Council meeting in Ras Al Khaimah, marking a significant step in the nation's efforts to advance agricultural sustainability.

Held at the farm of farmer Mohammed Al Marzouqi, the meeting coincided with the launch of the 'Plant the Emirates' National Programme, alongside the National Agriculture Centre, initiated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The programme aims to enhance crop productivity, support farmers, and improve food security by promoting climate-smart, sustainable agricultural practices. Dr. Al Dahak emphasized the UAE’s commitment to equipping farmers with modern technologies, training, and strategic support. She highlighted the role of young Emirati farmers, noting their essential contribution to transforming the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, discussions revolved around enhancing support for farmers, including the need for sustainable farming systems, improved pest control, and better communication with authorities. Strategies to optimize water use and increase farm productivity were also explored.

As part of ongoing engagement with farmers, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment also held the “Next Generation of Farmers” meeting, focusing on empowering youth to adopt innovative agricultural solutions. Dr. Al Dahak underscored the importance of adopting technologies that address challenges like water scarcity, particularly closed farming systems that reduce water use by up to 90%.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader sustainability goals, aiming for Net Zero by 2050 through reduced carbon emissions in key sectors, including agriculture. The meetings also paved the way for greater collaboration between the government, farmers, and the private sector in fostering a sustainable future for UAE agriculture.
