The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched a new initiative that engages young people in documenting the UAE’s mangrove ecosystems through professional photography, aiming to raise awareness of their environmental importance.

The programme, called Mangroves Through Youth Lens, is being rolled out in partnership with the Global Youth Programme and Nikon Middle East.

The initiative brings together creative arts and environmental education by organising guided photo walks across key mangrove reserves in the UAE. It also supports the objectives of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate, a global platform co founded by the UAE and Indonesia that now includes more than 45 member states committed to expanding mangrove restoration worldwide.

According to the Ministry, the programme is designed to empower participants to explore the beauty and ecological value of mangrove forests while learning how visual storytelling can contribute to conservation efforts. Mangroves serve as vital natural assets that support biodiversity, protect coastlines, and absorb significant amounts of carbon.

Hajar Bakhit Alketbi, Director of the Government Communication Department at the Ministry, said the initiative reflects a broader strategy to strengthen environmental education through creative engagement. She noted that photography offers a compelling way to communicate environmental messages and inspire a culture of sustainability among future generations.

The programme targets youth aged 15 to 35 from all nationalities. It begins with an environmental awareness workshop led by MOCCAE biodiversity experts, followed by a wildlife photography training session conducted by the Nikon Youth Programme. Each tour concludes with a field visit to a protected mangrove area.

Weekend photo walks will run throughout December at Jubail Park in Abu Dhabi, Jabal Ali Sanctuary in Dubai, Al Zorah Nature Reserve in Ajman, and the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre in Sharjah. Participation is limited to ensure a focused training experience, and interested individuals are encouraged to register through the provided link.
