The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has unveiled a comprehensive guide to support the implementation of Ministerial Decision No. 380 of 2022, which regulates single-use plastic products in the UAE market.

This landmark initiative underscores the country's commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.

Engineer Alia Abdul Rahim Al Harmoudi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector, highlighted that the guide serves as a vital resource for manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers. It promotes the shift from single-use plastics to eco-friendly alternatives, aiming to curb plastic pollution and foster environmentally sustainable practices nationwide.

Ministerial Decision No. 380, effective from January 1, 2024, includes stringent measures such as restrictions on single-use products and a complete ban on the import, production, and trade of single-use shopping bags, including those labelled as biodegradable. The decision also regulates the production and use of these products to mitigate their environmental impact.

The guide further details essential criteria for reusable bags, specifying that they must be washable, free from harmful substances, and compliant with UAE's technical standards and regulations. These specifications aim to ensure the safe and sustainable use of alternatives to single-use plastics.

By adopting these regulations, the UAE continues its efforts to protect the environment and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
