The UAE Ministry of Community Empowerment has launched “Al Yafnah,” a nationwide Ramadan initiative designed to strengthen social cohesion and revive neighbourhood gatherings as a central element of Emirati cultural identity.
Introduced in alignment with the designation of 2026 as the Year of Family, the initiative aims to reinforce community connections by encouraging shared experiences rooted in tradition and collective participation.
The first Al Yafnah gathering was held at Majlis Al Jefeer in Al Ain, marking the official rollout of a programme that will extend across eight residential neighbourhoods spanning seven emirates. The initiative forms part of a broader action plan led by the ministry in partnership with local stakeholders, neighbourhood councils, and community institutions.
Derived from a traditional term referring to the communal bowl around which people gather to share food, Al Yafnah symbolises unity, connection, and togetherness. The initiative seeks to revive the culture of communal iftar within neighbourhoods, creating opportunities for residents to interact, strengthen relationships, and foster a deeper sense of belonging.
Officials say the programme reflects a commitment to celebrating the unique Emirati Ramadan identity while engaging diverse segments of society. By bringing citizens, residents, and community leaders together, the initiative aims to promote shared responsibility and reinforce the role of families and neighbourhoods within the country’s broader social empowerment framework.
The ministry emphasised that the long-term success of community initiatives lies in their ability to build trust, encourage cooperation, and create sustainable social impact. Through its nationwide reach, Al Yafnah is expected to contribute to a more cohesive and resilient society grounded in mutual respect and social harmony.
