The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced its collaboration with Dubai-based motorsports and automotive events agency Pole Position to become the strategic partner of the UAE Greenpower STEM Education Programme in which teams of students build an electric car and race against other schools to determine who can build the most energy efficient electric vehicle.

On 20th March, students and teachers from GEMS Winchester School, who are participating in the programme, had the opportunity to visit the Ministry and talk about their experience of Greenpower with Sharif Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs.

The students described the benefits of working on the Greenpower Programme, how it has helped raise their awareness of sustainability issues and their excitement for the upcoming Race Finals in May 2024.

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure commends GEMS Winchester School's Greenpower car initiative, pledging support and program expansion across UAE schools. Ministry representatives will attend the Race Finals to meet students and award the winning team. Launched in 2023 with Greenpower Education Trust backing, the program engages 10 student teams aged 11-16 from GEMS Schools, fostering aerodynamic design and sustainability. The Finals feature two 60-minute races, culminating in prize presentations. The Greenpower Programme globally educates students in science, engineering, and teamwork through electric car building and racing, with a focus on encouraging female participation in engineering careers.

Al Olama, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young innovators and sustainability advocates, lauds the Greenpower Programme as a means to empower youth to tackle global challenges. Encouraging more schools to join, he envisions fostering innovative thinking among students.

Pole Position CEO Ryan Trutch expresses gratitude for the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure's support, aiming to expand the initiative across UAE schools. The program, attracting 10,000 students annually globally, ignites enthusiasm and encourages engineering careers in the electric vehicle and motorsports industry, with anticipation for the upcoming Race Finals.
