The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) has introduced a new Guide for Governance of Work Experience for Students in Higher Education Institutions, setting a national framework to enhance the quality and oversight of student training across universities and vocational institutions.
The guide aims to make work experience—formerly known as practical training—a core academic requirement that bridges education and employment. It defines clear roles for higher education institutions, training providers, and students to ensure that hands-on learning aligns with labour market needs while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and governance.
Taif Mohamed Alamiri, Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for the Higher Education Regulation and Governance Sector, said the guide provides a “clear, practical framework” for stakeholders and reflects MoHESR’s commitment to global best practices. Its implementation will be closely monitored through field visits and ongoing evaluations conducted in coordination with local and federal partners.
Under the new framework, higher education institutions must create structured plans, assign supervisors, and evaluate student performance, while work experience providers are required to maintain safe, supportive environments and appoint qualified mentors. Students are expected to demonstrate professionalism, regular attendance, and maintain an officially certified record of their activities.
MoHESR will oversee compliance through field monitoring and unannounced inspections, ensuring adherence to standards and continuous improvement across all programmes. The ministry has also established direct channels for feedback or violation reports through its Customer Happiness Centre (800511), via email at info@mohesr.gov.ae, its website, and mobile application.
The initiative reinforces MoHESR’s focus on integrating education with practical skills, positioning students for success in the UAE’s evolving labour market.
