The UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster the country's environmental and climate sustainability efforts through advanced geospatial mapping and data analysis. The agreement, signed at MOCCAE headquarters in Dubai, signifies a strategic move toward leveraging space-based data to aid environmental decision-making and policy formulation.
The MoU was signed by Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of MOCCAE, and Salem Humaid Al Marri, Director General of MBRSC, in the presence of Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. This collaboration aims to equip MOCCAE with real-time, data-driven insights into vital environmental areas, including wildlife, marine life, air quality, and agriculture.
Al Nuaimi emphasized the importance of cutting-edge technology in implementing best practices, saying,
“This collaboration empowers us to make informed decisions, supporting sustainable systems across key sectors and aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 objective.”
Al Marri highlighted the significance of geospatial technologies in advancing environmental policies, noting that the collaboration will aid in
"enhancing environmental monitoring and providing decision-makers with comprehensive information."
The partnership will involve the development of high-resolution maps using satellite data and AI-powered models, providing MOCCAE with essential insights for managing environmental resources effectively. With a focus on innovation, the MoU supports the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and its progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
