The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched a programme to enhance the efficiency of agricultural advisory services in the UAE.
The initiative aims to improve the skills and professional capacities of agricultural extension agents, enabling them to share modern farming techniques and technology to boost production. The programme includes specialised training in soil and irrigation, crop and vegetable production, fruit cultivation, pest prevention, beekeeping, and honey production. It also features lectures, workshops, and field courses to provide practical experience and improve communication skills.
Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hammadi, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Food Diversity Sector at MOCCAE, emphasized that the programme is part of a broader effort to support the sustainability of national farms and promote the transformation of food systems into more sustainable practices. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with partners, research centres, and global experts.
The ministry's efforts also include developing an annual agricultural guidance plan to monitor and support farmers in improving crop production and protection. This plan covers various crops, including date palms, fruits, vegetables, fodder, bees, and honey. It involves creating technical reports, offering recommendations, and conducting advisory visits to farms.
Al Hammadi noted that the programme aims to enhance communication between extension agents and farmers and schedule regular farm visits. Additionally, a plan for regular meetings with farmers will address challenges and improve crop yields. The initiative sets clear standards and objectives to enhance the quality and efficiency of agricultural guidance programmes, ultimately aiming to increase farmers' satisfaction and support the UAE's food security goals.
